About The College

History

The Government Mamit College was established under the patronage of local enthusiasts including local leaders, Village Council members and local educated persons longing for higher education. It was opened with a few students on 1st April 1983 by the then SDO (Civil) PuR.Selthuama.The College was set up with the objective to achieve excellence in higher education/studies specifically for the backward/ minority inhabitants of western Mizoram. Since then the college grew up in size and enrolment.

In the beginning, the College was known as Kaichhunga College, christened after Kaichhunga, an enthusiast in higher education from Aizawl who generously donated a sum of Rs 40000/-(Rupees forty thousand), then a big amount, to run the college. Later it wasrenamed as Mamit College in March 1987.The college was run solely on the financial contributions made by the local people, imminent personsand Village Council leaderstill the College was upgraded to Deficit Status in April 1993.

The Government Mamit College is located in the heart of Mamit Town, the headquarters of Mamit District in the western part of Mizoram, bordering with states of Assam, Tripura and neighbouring country Bangladesh. It is 96 kms away from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. As the college is centrally located within Mamit District, it is easily accessible to the public and provides a congenial atmosphere for higher education.

The Mamit District, where the Government Mamit College is located, is a Schedule Tribe and Minority Concentration Area.It is inhabited by minority tribes like Brus (Reangs)otherwise called as Tuikuks to the local people, Chakmas and majority Mizos.Since Mamit District is a minority concentration district, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has identified Mamit District as one of the 90 Districts in India as very Backward District. In the same situation, the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, too has identified Mamit District as one out of the 374 Educationally Backward Districts (EBDs) in India. As such, at one time, the UGC has proposed Government Mamit College for conversion into a MODEL COLLEGE, being one of the Educationally Backward Districts in India. The location of Government Mamit College was commented by UGC “as having an ideal location, a small grassy hillock with green plantationand a cozy atmosphere. Its tranquil environment is quite favorable for contemplation and learning” whileMamit District as “Tribal, Border, Hilly and Forested (TBHF) area”.

Initially, the Mamit College had functioned for some time by hiring Government Middle School-I&II buildings. However, very soon the Governing Body of the college acquired a substantial plot of land for the college for its permanent Campus, and constructed an Assam-typed-tin-roofed small building having four rooms. Then the college moved to this newly constructed building in 1991.  The area of the Campus measures 12604 sq.metres (9.4 Bighas). The Collegecompound isbig and spacious enough for the development ofInfrastructures and construction of modern RCC Buildings. The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2005.

In 1990, the Government of Mizoram granted “permission to open the College” and immediately the college applied for Affiliation under North Eastern HillsUniversity (NEHU) Shillong. On 21 August 1991, NEHU Inspection Team visited the College for affiliation.
